You Can Always Express Thanks

A sincere expression of thanks often encourages and lifts others up. It makes a connection; it kind of says, “I get you and I am grateful for what you have done.” This connection can happen when you let someone cut in front of you in traffic, and they express thanks; or when you say, “Thank you” for a service provided or a gift given. Thanks can build a positive connection.

The apostle Paul wrote, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) Notice he did not say to be thankful FOR all circumstances. Many of life’s situations are difficult, and some are downright evil or malicious. We are not instructed to pretend such settings and incidents are good. Instead, we are to look for God amidst every situation. We are to look for what He might be doing.

Notice the progression of the verses. We are to live in the joy of our relationship with Jesus. This relationship is constant and not dependent on conditions. And, we are to live prayerfully. We can constantly interact with God. A lifestyle of joyful prayer is complemented by an attitude of thankfulness. Even amidst negative circumstances we can give thanks to God, because “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

So, we cultivate a joyful, prayerful and thankful heart toward God by expressing real thanks to Him. This builds a positive connection in our relationship. This kind of lifestyle also frees us from a scarcity mentality that causes us to fear and feel like life is a constant competition for resources and position. Additionally, thankfulness toward God releases thankfulness toward people, and thus builds relationships with people.

Psalm 100 says to enter the gates of God’s temple area with thanksgiving. Thanks is one of the initial steps of relational connection with God. It is also a point of real connection with people. Take stock of how many times you express thanks to God and to people each day. As you increase your expressions of thankfulness, you will see the spiritual and relational atmosphere around you soften up. Thanks is the language of appreciation in heaven and on earth.
