The Power of Twos and Threes
We don’t want to suggest that there is an easy method to make things go your way. Nor do we want to insinuate that you can mechanically assemble your prayers to get results. Prayer is a mystery, and it is also a relationship. We don’t submit invoices to God, but we interact with Him and discover His will.
There is an important dynamic, however, that many people often miss concerning effective prayer – and that is praying with others. Jesus said, “I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in My name, there I am with them.” (Matthew 18:19-20). What a powerful promise! The context is dealing with the difficulties of confronting and addressing sin, but the promise is very broad. “If two of you will agree about anything you ask for,” in other words if you will pray with one or two other people, you will experience the power of the Father’s answers to your prayers.
If we consistently pray together in twos and threes in our families, with our friends and/or in our work places, imagine what God will do. Jesus declares His presence amidst such gatherings as well as His Father’s answers to prayers that emanate from these simple settings.
It seems that we would all do well to exercise and rely on this promise much more frequently. Is there any one with whom you can pray regularly? Are there “anyones” with whom you could spend some time discerning God’s will, and with whom you could specifically agree in prayer for the Father to do it? Why not try it out? Take the time to develop the practice of prayer with one or two others, and you can confidently believe that you will see new Kingdom power emerge all around your life.
May God stir us up in twos and threes in His presence, and may we somehow stir Him up through our prayers of agreement!
Agreeing with you,
Pastor Tom
