Rare vs. There
In the Old Testament we see record of God showing up in great power to lead and direct His people, but these theophanies were rare and inconsistent. God tended to reveal Himself to prophets, priests or kings – and that, almost exclusively during times of great stress or in preparation for significant change. These signs and wonders were to get His people’s attention, so that He could communicate with them.
Interestingly, we see much fewer of these God-displays in the New Testament other than healings. Might it be that in God’s progressive revelation of Himself, less show was/is needed? In 1 Kings 19:11-12 we see God approach Elijah in a very interesting way. He provides a few powerful displays: mountains tearing, rocks flying, wind howling, an earthquake and a fire; yet God was not present in any of the displays. Then Elijah heard a gentle whisper (or the King James versions says, “A still, small voice”), and this was God – this was the Holy Spirit speaking to Elijah.
Jeremiah prophesied centuries ago of a coming day when all the people of God would actually “know” [and experience the voice of] the Lord. (Jeremiah 31:34) And Joel described a time when the Spirit of God would come upon everyone, not just the prophets, priests and kings. (Joel 2:28-32) Well, that time has come! After Jesus was raised from the dead, the Holy Spirit was “poured out” on all believers like never before. Peter said that this gift of the Holy Spirit was “for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39)
The point is that God’s appearances are no longer rare. If you have faith in Christ, He’s right there with you. He has revealed Himself as “Emmanuel” – God with us. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is now “within you” [or among us]. (Luke 17:21)
His presence and wisdom are not rare, He is right there by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. All the powerful displays of God are summed up in His presence. Knowing Him and knowing that He knows you is the fullness of life. Such knowledge leads to the security that you are in His hands, and that He will lead you. Why not take a moment and re-affirm your faith in Jesus, and declare that the Holy Spirit is right there with you now? Then live your day like He is with you; talk with Him, ask for His guidance and obey what you believe to be His leading. You don’t have to wait for a crisis, live with Him right where you are. This is a fun and fulfilling way to live. This is the Christian life!
