History

Our church history goes back over 100 years to the start of a German Baptist church downtown which moved to Jamaica Plain at the turn of the century. Our building was built in 1904 without a basement. The basement was dug out by hand over the next 20 years.
Our history also involves the early stages of a Christian and Missionary “branch” that began to gather believers from different churches on Sunday afternoons to consider missions and deeper life in Christ in the early 1900s. This “branch” moved from downtown to Roxbury to Brookline. In 1969 the Alliance church merged with the Baptist church in our present location, and became Rock Hill Alliance Church.
In 1994 there was another merge. Rock Hill Alliance Church merged with Mission Hill Baptist Church to form River of Life Church. This merge was centered on a purpose to reach people in Jamaica Plain, Mission Hill, Roslindale and West Roxbury and disciple them in Jesus Christ. This still guides much of our thinking and action today. We want to follow the Lord’s guidance, willing to do whatever we can to express the tangible love of Jesus Christ to Greater Jamaica Plain. We believe the best way to do this is to develop a network of related ministries, small groups, house churches and churches in this portion of Boston.
